BBC's Realstory ran a program last night about the dangers of dumping your PC at the local recycling point. On BBC's This Morning program they had a geek chatting a bit more about the issue. He suggested removing the hard drive and whacking it with a hammer (don't forget the safety goggles!) until you have loads of little pieces. I couldn't help laughing at this fella with the safety goggles on and the cheesy smile. Obviously he hasn't done that before because a) his hammer was quite small and b) the hard drive has a very strong casing specifically to protect the drive from impacts such as a geek attacking it with a little hammer. If you do want to go the violent route, remember to first open up the hard drive (thats hard drive, not PC case) and remove the little disk inside - whack that until all your stress has been released. Real men, however, do not whack little discs with little hammers. Real men use fireworks, acids, fire accelerants and other fun methods to destroy hard drives. Its a lot more fun. The other - more gentleman - approach is to send the drive to a data destruction specialist. If this is your prefered method, give Genzee a call. Ofcourse, you could always buy a Dell laptop and wait for it to explode and destroy all your data :) Feel free to send me your photos on how you destroy your hard drives.
